Understanding PA utilities
Your electric utility is the company that delivers electricity to your home. In Pennsylvania, utilities own and maintain the distribution infrastructure — the poles, wires, transformers, and meters that bring power to your door.
In PA's deregulated market, your utility handles distribution (delivery) while your supplier handles generation (the actual electricity). When you switch suppliers, your utility doesn't change — only the supply portion of your bill.
The six major investor-owned utilities (PECO, PPL, Duquesne Light, Met-Ed, Penelec, and Penn Power/West Penn) serve about 95% of PA's residential customers. The remainder are served by rural electric cooperatives and municipal utilities.
