What “100% renewable” actually means
When a plan is labeled “100% renewable,” your electrons still come from the same regional grid as everyone else. What makes it green is that the supplier purchases Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) equal to your usage. Each REC represents 1 MWh of renewable generation somewhere in the country.
This is a legitimate market mechanism that funds renewable energy development. But it's not the same as your home being powered directly by a wind turbine. We include REC-backed plans because they represent real environmental investment — just understand what you're buying.
Why most “green energy” lists mislead
What other sites do
- •Mix 50% renewable plans with 100% renewable
- •Include variable-rate “green” plans that spike after month one
- •Rank by commission rates, not actual environmental value
- •Claim “carbon neutral” without explaining what that means
What we do differently
- •100% renewable only — no partial green plans
- •Fixed-rate, 3+ months — no intro rate bait-and-switch
- •Ranked by rate — lowest price wins, period
- •REC transparency— we explain what you're actually buying

Green Energy Market Context
Pennsylvania's competitive electricity market includes dozens of 100% renewable energy plans from PUC-licensed suppliers. These plans are backed by Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) that match your usage with equivalent renewable generation.
As of May 2026, green energy rates in PA range from approximately 7.7¢ to 12¢ per kWh for fixed-rate plans. The green premium — the extra cost for choosing renewable energy — has shrunk to near zero in many cases, making environmental choice economically competitive.
For context, utility default rates (Price to Compare) range from about 11¢ to 14¢ per kWh depending on your utility. Many 100% renewable plans now beat the default rate, meaning you can save money while supporting clean energy development.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are RECs and how do green energy plans work?
Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are tradeable certificates representing 1 megawatt-hour of renewable energy generation. When you sign up for a 100% renewable plan, your supplier purchases RECs equal to your electricity usage. The actual electrons you receive come from the regional grid (a mix of sources), but the REC purchase ensures an equivalent amount of renewable energy was added to the grid somewhere in the country.
Is green energy more expensive than regular electricity?
Not necessarily. As of May 2026, the cheapest 100% renewable plan in Pennsylvania costs around 9-10¢/kWh — competitive with or cheaper than many non-renewable fixed-rate plans. The green energy premium has shrunk significantly as wind and solar costs have declined. Some suppliers offer renewable plans at rates lower than your utility's Price to Compare.
What's the difference between carbon offsets and RECs?
RECs represent actual renewable energy generation — 1 REC = 1 MWh of wind, solar, or other renewable energy added to the grid. Carbon offsets are separate financial instruments that fund projects to reduce or capture carbon emissions (like tree planting or methane capture). Some plans include both; this page focuses on REC-backed renewable plans.
Can I get green energy if I rent or live in an apartment?
Yes. In Pennsylvania's deregulated electricity market, renters and apartment dwellers have the same right to choose their electricity supplier as homeowners. You don't need landlord permission to switch suppliers because you're not changing anything about the physical delivery of electricity — you're just choosing who supplies the generation.
Do green energy plans affect my electric service reliability?
No. Your local utility (PECO, Duquesne Light, PPL, etc.) still maintains the wires and handles delivery regardless of which supplier you choose. Service reliability, outage response, and grid maintenance are unchanged. The only thing that changes is who generates the electricity you're billed for and whether that generation is backed by renewable energy certificates.
