Why fixed-rate plans?
Variable rates change monthly based on wholesale market conditions — they can spike without warning. Fixed-rate plans lock in your supply rate for the full term, providing budget certainty. Volt Butler's 3+ month minimum filter excludes introductory teaser rates that reset to unknown prices after 30 days.
Best for Rate Stability
Long-term fixed plans (12+ months) that protect against SSO increases. The foundation of fixed-rate shopping — locking in a competitive rate for the longest defensible term.

Why this category leads. On a fixed-rate page, rate stability is the core value proposition. A 12+ month fixed plan is the strongest form of rate protection available in Ohio's deregulated market. Even if a shorter plan offers a lower rate today, the long-term lock protects you against quarterly SSO adjustments and seasonal wholesale price swings.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a fixed-rate electricity plan?
A fixed-rate plan locks in your electricity supply rate for the full contract term. If you sign a 12-month fixed plan at 6.50¢/kWh, that rate stays at 6.50¢/kWh for all 12 months regardless of wholesale market fluctuations. Your total bill can still vary with usage (you pay for what you consume), but the per-kWh supply rate won't change.
How long should I lock in a fixed rate in Ohio?
It depends on your stability horizon. If you plan to stay at your current address for 12+ months, a longer-term fixed plan (12-24 months) offers maximum protection against rate increases. If you might move within 6 months, a shorter fixed-rate plan (3-6 months) with a low ETF gives you rate certainty without a long commitment. Avoid month-to-month variable plans if budget predictability matters to you.
What happens when my fixed-rate plan expires in Ohio?
When your fixed-rate contract ends, your supplier will either roll you onto a variable month-to-month rate or you'll revert to your utility's Standard Service Offer (SSO). Both outcomes typically cost more than a competitive fixed rate. Set a calendar reminder 30 days before your term ends to shop for a new fixed-rate plan.
Are fixed-rate plans more expensive than variable rates?
Not necessarily. Fixed rates sometimes carry a small premium because the supplier absorbs wholesale price risk on your behalf. But variable rates can spike without warning during high-demand periods — a single winter month at 15¢/kWh can erase months of savings from a 'cheaper' variable rate. Fixed plans trade potential savings for certainty.
What is an early termination fee (ETF)?
An ETF is a fee charged if you cancel your fixed-rate plan before the contract term ends. Common ETFs range from $50 to $200. Some plans offer no ETF at all, giving you the fixed-rate protection without a cancellation penalty. We display ETF amounts on every plan card so you can factor it into your decision.
Why does Volt Butler filter to 3+ month fixed plans?
Some suppliers offer 1-month 'fixed' introductory rates at artificially low prices that reset to much higher rates after 30 days. A 4.99¢ rate that becomes 14.99¢ after one month isn't genuine rate protection. Our 3-month minimum filter excludes these teaser rates so every plan in our rankings delivers real, sustained budget certainty.
