Illinois
Best electricity plans in Illinois
Illinois has two electricity markets with different rates, so we rank them separately: ComEd (northern Illinois) and Ameren Illinois(central and southern). Each ranking uses only that utility's plans and its own Price to Compare — independent verdicts, no paid placements.
First: are you on a municipal aggregation rate?
Many Illinois communities run opt-out municipal aggregation programs that automatically enroll residents in a town-negotiated supply rate. If you're on one, the rate on your bill is your aggregation rate, and that — not your utility's Price to Compare — is the number a plan below has to beat. Check your bill first. How Illinois municipal aggregation works.
ComEd territory
Northern Illinois, including the Chicago metro. Rankings below cover only ComEd plans — the ComEd Price to Compare benchmark is 10.399¢/kWh; a competitive plan has to beat that (or your aggregation rate, if you're on one).

Illinois electricity FAQ
- How often are the winners updated?
- Plan data refreshes weekly from Plug In Illinois. Category winners are re-evaluated monthly. If a winner's rate changes significantly mid-month, we update immediately.
- Why doesn't your "best overall" pick match other sites?
- Other sites typically rank by rate alone, or by which supplier pays the highest commission. Our overall ranking weighs rate, term length, early termination fees, and supplier track record. Different methodology, different winner.
- Is the "lowest rate" winner always the best choice?
- No. The lowest-rate plan may have a short term, a high ETF, or be from a supplier with a less reliable track record. That's why we rank by category — different shoppers need different plans.
- Why aren't all IL suppliers represented in the winners?
- We rank from ICC-licensed suppliers with active residential plans on Plug In Illinois. Some suppliers have active licenses but no current residential plan offerings — they're excluded from rankings but not from the comprehensive supplier list.
- Can I trust your rankings if you earn commissions?
- We earn affiliate commissions when readers switch through our links. But commissions don't influence rankings — plans are ranked by category criteria, not by what we earn. If a plan we earn commission from doesn't actually win its category, it doesn't appear in the winners list.
